Choosing the Right Type of Cutting Fluid

Water-based metalworking fluids are typically divided into three categories:

Each type has its own advantages and disadvantages. There is no perfect formula—users should make decisions based on machining materials, process complexity, and cooling/lubrication requirements. The goal is to select the most suitable type for your specific application.

Daily Maintenance: The Key to Fluid Longevity

As the Chinese proverb says, “30% treatment, 70% maintenance.” This also holds true in managing metalworking fluids. Here’s how you can maintain your fluid system and significantly extend its usable life:

1. Control Concentration Within Recommended Range

Every cutting fluid has a recommended dilution ratio. We suggest maintaining the concentration within or 1–2% above the recommended range.

  • This stabilizes machining quality and tool life.

  • It also helps resist microbial growth and fluid degradation.

  • Cost concern? Don’t worry—most fluid loss during machining is due to water evaporation, not the active components. Therefore, topping up does not drastically increase total usage.

2. Maintain Proper Fluid Levels

  • For centralized systems, keep fluid level at 60%–80% of tank capacity.

  • For individual machines, try to keep it above 80%.
    Low levels can lead to concentration fluctuations, pump cavitation, and increased fluid degradation.

3. Set a Target Concentration Threshold

Monitor fluid concentration. When it falls below the minimum effective threshold, replenish with diluted fresh fluid accordingly.

4. Add Fluids at the Pump Inlet Area

When topping up, add pre-diluted cutting fluid near the pump inlet area to accelerate circulation and ensure quick blending into the system.

Managing pH: A Critical Indicator of Fluid Health

The optimal pH range for most water-based metalworking fluids is 8.8 to 9.5. A declining pH is common and can indicate bacterial activity or fluid degradation.

What to Do If pH Drops:

  • pH 8.5–8.8:
    Add a pH booster, and check for microbial contamination.

  • pH below 8.5 with odor present:
    Take immediate biocidal action, identify the root cause, and implement a full system maintenance plan.

  • If machining quality is still acceptable, try increasing the concentration by 1–2%, clean tramp oil, and ensure fluid recirculates properly.
